Custom packaging for safe storage of jerry cans

The environmental department of the Dutch army chooses again for Engels Logistiek B.V. This time Engels provides a solution that prevents fuel from accidentally ending up in the soil.

  • It would disturb any soldier. You are busy with a tactical operational exercise where you try to follow all the regulations, including those for the environment. It is demotivating if you, despite your best efforts, have to conclude that it is practically impossible to meet those requirements.

Klaas Groen and Jasper Veurink, staff members of the environmental department, understood the problem their colleagues in the field were dealing with. If you transport, store and camouflage jerry cans with fuel without suitable outer packaging, the fuel will soon or later leak into the bottom. “There has to be another way”, thought Klaas and Jasper. And they presented their problem to Engels Logistiek B.V. They asked us if we could come up with a sustainable and practical solution for them. After having properly investigated the problem and the requirements, the Engels packaging specialist, Martijn van Kessel, came up with a suitable solution. These were special boxes for jerry can storage.

In order to make the boxes widely applicable to the various army units, the boxes have been released in the following 3 variants:

    • A box for 3 jerry cans that mainly serves as a drip tray.
    • A box with raised edges, where a spill kit can be supplied under the lid to absorb any leaking liquid.
    • A box that holds 12 jerry cans, that is suitable for static storage.

Interesting fact: even the last box is so light that, when empty, it can easily be moved by hand in difficult to access terrain.

In addition to the environmental requirements, the boxes also meet the following army requirements and wishes:

    • The boxes must be very robust.
    • The boxes must be tactically deployable and must have a dark color.
    • Possible labels have to be placed on a low position.
    • The boxes must be drip-proof.
    • The boxes must have good passive ventilation.
    • The boxes must be sustainably produced and have a long lifecycle.

Supported by a new regulation, every unit within the army, has access to these storage and transport boxes. A great result, achieved through good communication and collaboration with the various disciplines within the land forces of the Dutch army and Engels Logistiek B.V., a result that Jasper, Klaas and Martijn can be justifiably proud of!

Engels Logistiek BV, for decades the reliable partner for the Dutch Ministry of Defence with regard to sustainable storage and transport equipment.
